Bringing The Union to SoSA

Former union hall opens as SoSA’s first bar and restaurant

One of Midtown’s hottest areas now has its own restaurant and bar. The Union@SoSA opens on Saturday with live music in its outdoor courtyard, food and cocktail bar.

The 1956 former electricians’ union hall at 616 NW 5 in Midtown has been redeveloped by owners Stephen Marco, Drew Mains and Zach Foster.

A high-end cocktail bar awaits visitors, with an upstairs area for relaxing and an outside patio complete with 1970s Airstream trailer serving patio drinks and food.

The kitchen is open until 1 a.m., serving sandwiches and salads made with local produce and house-made dressings.

Signs of The Union@SoSA's former use remain in the soon-to-be-opened venue: The former safe used by union workers is now used as a coffee table, and electrical boxes decorate the wall. The two-story building reportedly had a secret basement used as a speakeasy for union members.

SoSA, or South of St Anthony, has enjoyed a rapid revival with plush apartment blocks, architect-designed homes, a coffee house and boutiques filling an area which just five years ago was mainly occupied with vacant lots and boarded-up buildings.

“We want to be the anchor for the whole area,” says Marco, who feels the opening of their bar will spur even more businesses to invest in the area. “It’s in such a great location, and we’re already getting positive feedback from our visitors who see being able to walk to our venue as a bonus.”
