First Farmers Market for The Paseo

Local growers gather at SixTwelve to start weekly market

The Paseo will host its first farmers market this weekend at SixTwelve community education center, with help from Holey Rollers.

During the seven years that she has lived in The Paseo, market founder Megan Sisco has worked with Urban Agrarian to organize local farmers markets and running her own around the metro – while wishing there was one in her local neighborhood. Her most recent venture was a weekly Sunday spot in the Farmers Market District, but according to Sisco, it “lacked the support we needed to keep it going.”

After a conversation with her friend and fellow farmers market organizer Andrea Koester, owner of Paseo donut and coffee hotspot Holey Rollers, her wish has finally come to fruition.

“My friend Andrea and I were discussing whether or not we were going to revive that market (in the Farmers Market District) this year, and both expressed how much we wished we could just start one in our neighborhood – light bulb – let’s start one,” Sisco says.

With help from fellow founder Paul Mays and SixTwelve’s partnership, the market will open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon through Oct. 27, along with a SixTwelve Coffee Talk program where the community can get together and enjoy coffee and Holey Roller donuts beginning at 8 a.m.

SixTwelve co-founder and executive director Amy Young says, “We just knew that we had to take the opportunity when it presented itself, because we had always wanted to have a farmers market at SixTwelve, we just weren’t that far along in adding to our programming to make it happen yet.

“To have neighbors that we know, love and respect ask if they could organize it on our property was the best kind of partnership we could ask for. And it makes it possible for us to offer more, much sooner on our timeline of program development.”

Sisco said she’s getting daily applications from vendors, with the list so far including Commonwealth Urban Farms, Community Hope Growers, Green Gold Gardens and Esca Vitae – to name a few. An artist collective booth featuring ceramics by Taussen Brewer and Amy Sanders, and artwork and screen-printed tote bags by Ruth Loveland is also planned.

“I really love the idea of being able to wake up on a Saturday morning and walk down the street to purchase local, organically grown produce, and talk face to face with the person who grew it,” says Sisco. “I’m hoping my neighbors love it as well.”
