Ponyboy Grows Up(Stairs)

Uptown 23rd bar adds second-story dance floor

Ponyboy, the newest bar in Uptown 23rd, will expand its operations on Friday with the opening of a second bar upstairs. The plan from the beginning was to open the downstairs bar (check), and remodel the upstairs (check). Rachel Cope, CEO and founder of 84 Hospitality Group, said the redesign is complete, and service will begin this weekend.

“We tore out all the old booths,” Cope says. “I like moveable furniture in a bar; that way you can set up for any kind of events. We raised the seating a bit, because the old furniture was too low to the ground, and there is still plenty of space.”

So much space, in fact, that Cope is hoping people will be dancing in Uptown. The space will double as a music venue and dance floor, with a capacity of 60-100 people. For the opening on Friday, Carte Blanche will be DJ-ing upstairs, the first of many DJ nights to come.

“There are a few places in town where you can go and dance and no one will make fun of you,” Cope says. “Places like Groovy’s. I want that in Uptown at Ponyboy. We have all this space upstairs. We want DJs in there on weekends to get people dancing.”

The bar service upstairs will be identical to downstairs, with the exception of coffee: Ponyboy’s full coffee service will be downstairs only, but guests are welcome to bring their coffee drinks to the upstairs bar. The cocktail list will be the same at both bars, and bar manager Micah Anderson will oversee both.

Ponyboy is built around an Oklahoma theme, and the decor upstairs will reflect that, including an old “Oklahoma Station” sign that’s been converted into a lit backbar. A foosball table is also upstairs to help with the casual, lounge vibe. Ponyboy has snacks available, but no food menu.

While there are doors both upstairs and downstairs, Cope said access will be via the staircase downstairs for security and age verification purposes. For now, the upstairs bar will open at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night only and remain open until 2 a.m. – a space to stay gold.
