"Sandy Magrath: Dogs of the Southwest" art exhibit will be open May 1 - June 30, 2019, at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, OK.
A meet the artist reception will be 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Heritage Center. Her work will also be available to purchase.
Magrath is inspired by the designs and colors of the Southwest, and by her dogs.
"Most of my subjects are current or past personal companions that will live forever in my heart. I love all animals, but have a crazy love for dogs," she said.
Magrath, a Norman native, graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She moved to Texas in 1987 and 10 years later, started Texas Autosports with her husband. In 2011, they sold the business and traveled the country in a motor home, before settling down in Norman. She’s started a new career as an artist and creates happy dog portraits using colorful acrylic paints and large canvases.
An Australian Shepherd named Scooter, who she adopted from a shelter, was her first subject.
“He had lots of personality and one bum eye, but I painted him with two good eyes because I didn’t want anyone to think I was a bad painter. He was a great dog,” she said.
