As a consumer, high fashion can be a frustrating balancing act; it’s difficult to find an affordable shop that offers unique brands tailored to one’s liking. However, LJH Concepts takes convenience and quality clothing to a new level. Starting with a buy-and-sell Instagram page, owner Leah Houts was able to craft her own business to help adults find designer apparel right in the heart of Norman. Houts takes pride in her plethora of brand-new and pre-owned items, as she aims to sell clothing that cannot be found in local malls and department stores.
Affordability is one of the most prominent goals that Houts’ business has attained. “I asked myself, ‘What is something that Norman-OKC is missing?’” Houts said. “Oklahoma is not the fashion mecca of the United States, so finding affordable and up-to-date fashion, for the majority of the public, is not easy.” Houts understands the struggle of finding the right apparel for a convenient price. As the owner of Norman’s clothing store Appello from 2003-2009, she was able to help a multitude of women find the clothing they felt most confident wearing.
For Houts, the business of fashion was her ultimate passion project, but it hasn’t always been an easy road in developing her own company. “In April of 2019, the father of my children suddenly passed away, and in September, I lost my job in the oil and gas industry,” Houts said. “I searched relentlessly for a job for months with no success. With three kids relying solely on me, I was scared to death.” With such hardship at hand, Houts knew she had to build her own platform. “So, I started selling some of my old clothes online to earn just enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table.” Working 18- to 20-hour days, Houts was able to create LJH Concepts while overcoming her personal challenges.
Leah Houts is the perfect combination of hard work and creativity, which is consistently showcased in her online shop. With a love for fashion and affordability, LJH Concepts is made for locals with an eye for the finer things in life, and Houts aims to expand her business into a retail store in Norman in the near future.
