Would-be painters of all skill levels come to Henry Home Interiors in Norman to learn techniques from artist Sara Kay Michael and create their own paintings in a fun evening out with wine, food bites and good company. Michael called the collaboration between artist and store a “perfect pair” — take a closer look here.

Every couple of months, Henry Home Interiors in Norman rearranges an area in its furniture showroom to make space for a painting art class taught by Edmond artist Sara Kay Michael. Her joyful, colorful, abstract designs caught the eye of Henry Home owner Katelynn Calonkey Henry a while ago, and the store started carrying her art.

Now painters of all skill levels are having a great time inviting people to come paint at Michael’s classes, said Henry Homes lead designer Steve Calonkey. Participants leave with their own unique piece of art.

“They’re a great event that’s a lot of fun, with a lot of laughs and good times,” he said, adding that the classes at Henry Home usually sell out as people attend from throughout Oklahoma and the region.

Painters come for wine, food, fellowship and Sara Kay’s abstract art techniques, which the artist loves to share. Calonkey noted that he’s been “getting better” with each class.

“They’re fun; they’re refreshing,” he said. “Everyone gets to paint their own subject matter.”

Sara Kay began painting full time when she became a single mom and needed to heal herself. She started teaching classes a few years ago to share all that she had learned, both in technique and in healing. Her collaboration with Henry Home has made a “perfect pair,” she said, as she likes the Norman store and its owners as much as they like her art.

The artist goes by Sara Kay professionally, and her Edmond studio near NW 164th St. and Portland Ave. is called Sara Kay Art Studio. People can check out her art, buy other gifts and take art classes there.

“Art has done so much for my family and for my mental health,” Sara Kay said. “I love art and love to share it with people.”
