Yes, Ponyboy is back! The Uptown 23rd bar has reopened, and while the dancing hasn’t returned yet, the creative, delicious cocktails have. Alex Larrea is still helping steer the program, but the team also has an embarrassing wealth of bartending experience. The menu includes a couple zero-proof cocktails, but the thrust is still complex, layered, approachable cocktails for people who really dig a creative bar experience.
The Baby Godzilla manages to combine fresh green bell pepper syrup with cucumber vodka and Midori, and what would seem to be a disaster in the works, is actually a refreshing, delicious dive into flavors of spring. Obahoshe Rum from Prairie Wolf Spirits, factors into several of the cocktails, so Ponyboy is still trying to keep it as local as possible. The Astronaut Juice is a split base of Obahoshe and a funky Jamaican rum with passion fruit, apricot preserves and lime. It starts like Tang – appropriate given the name – but that Jamaican rum takes you on a hard 90-degree turn at the mid-palate, making this a cocktail for grownups, and definitely after breakfast. For the kid hidden inside, a plastic astronaut is the garnish.
