There is no shortage of fantastic lakes in Oklahoma. For a perfect year-round one-stop vacation, Shangri-La Resort makes the good life easy. This little bubble of fun is nestled on the picturesque shores of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees on Monkey Island, Oklahoma. At only 119 rooms, it feels manageable and has family vibes.

Golf lovers will feel right at home at the resort’s two courses: The Battlefield, and its 18 full-length, par-3 holes allowing players of all levels to use every iron in their bag; as well as The Championship Golf Course, a 27-hole championship golf course set against the scenic backdrop of the lake. This course is most famous for its ninth hole — known as the Mickey Mantle Hole, it’s named after the New York Yankees legend who hosted his Mickey Mantle Golf Classic charity tournament at Shangri-La from 1991 until his death in 1995. Mantle once shot an albatross on the challenging par 5.

Additional family activities include an arcade, billiard games and a massive pickleball tent with outdoor options, as well as a day spa, park and playground, and a large and luxurious pool and swim area with cabanas, hot tubs and activities. In the summer months, guests and members can enjoy a variety of water sports activities; several types of boats to rent and yacht charters are available in the marina.

Food offerings include several lakeside bars, coffee shops, Doc’s Bar & Grill and The Summit for fine dining and excellent wine pairings. The resort frequently offers live music and events and a chance for families to wander around, take walks along the lake and head home fully refreshed.
