Oklahoma has a diverse landscape equipped for almost any outdoor activity, with the exception of more winter-centric hobbies like alpine skiing and snowboarding. This seasonal exclusion is set to change in Spring 2021 with Riversport Adventure Park’s latest indoor installment, Ski OKC.
“Inasmuch Foundation is a proud supporter of RIVERSPORT Foundation’s efforts to provide numerous activities for our entire community to enjoy,” Bob Ross, president and CEO of Inasmuch Foundation wrote in a press release. “The new indoor ski experience offers yet another adventure at the Boathouse District, but more importantly, it’s bringing a life experience to our underserved youth who may never have the opportunity to ski or snowboard.”
Installed inside the Riversport’s Whitewater Center, the stationary simulator is covered by PoleSnow, an artificial snow-topped grass using low-friction fibers sprayed by water to replicate the effect of misting, active snow. The facility’s simulator also allows for slope customizations, including steepness and difficulty, to design the user’s preferred terrain. With an additional ramp to practice jumps and a projected ski course, the capabilities of this experience will continue to grow as technology advances.
“Riversport will be the first place in the world you can snow ski, surf and whitewater raft all in one location,” Riversport Executive Director Mike Knopp wrote in a press release. “Ski OKC will be open to passholders throughout the season, and we’ll offer ski and snowboard lessons. In the fall we’ll offer additional sessions for people to brush up on their skills before they head out on their annual ski trip.”
