The wholesaler opened the first club in Midwest City 40 years ago and has grown to nearly 600 clubs since.
Sam’s Club serves millions of members in nearly 600 clubs across the nation. However, most people are unaware the wholesaler got its start in Oklahoma 40 years ago.
The first Sam’s Club opened in Midwest City in 1983, 21 years after Sam Walton founded Walmart. The flagship Sam’s Club hosted a community event to celebrate the birth of the brand and its ongoing commitment to serving Oklahomans at the original location.
As part of the celebration, the club recognized the $171,000 raised over the years to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network, which helps cover the cost of lifesaving medical treatment for kids in the U.S. and Canada.
“Mr. Sam’s vision of serving our members and bringing the best value has paved the way for the past 40 years in all the communities we serve,” said Sam’s Club manager Ramon Garcia. “If everything we do is focused on our members and their needs, we will continue to be successful.”
“We’re celebrating 40 years of serving in our communities, and there’s no better place to start that celebration than our Midwest City club,” Shanks said. “We look forward to building on this legacy for many years to come.”
