SusieCakes Founder and CEO Susie Sarich uses several of her grandmothers’ tried-and-true recipes for the baked goods offered within her bakery (available at Classen Curve as well as locations throughout California, Texas and Tennessee). Sarich also applies her grandmothers’ knack for hosting as she plans her own gatherings.
Sarich calls her grandmothers “the original tablescapers,” since they were both adept at arranging the perfect table setting, menu and decor. Drawing on her heritage, Sarich recently shared some holiday entertaining advice with us. Of course, beautiful and delicious desserts can enhance any party—but small, thoughtful details sprinkled throughout the scene can also help make the time together extra sweet.
Create a Warm Welcome
As guests arrive, set the scene for your event with lights strategically placed on your front porch. Outdoor lighting and lanterns instantly create a welcoming atmosphere.
Pay Attention to Details
Seasonal linens on the table and hand towels in the bathrooms provide opportunities to celebrate the occasion. You can also find cocktail napkins to match your holiday decor. To make the most of your group’s dynamics (and various personalities), consider putting place cards on your table.
Prepare in Advance
To alleviate stress, do as much as you can in the days leading up to the event. Set the table early. Select and place linens, dishes, silverware, candles and centerpieces. Go ahead and purchase that extra ice. The more you can do in advance, the more time and energy you will have to enjoy your guests.
Enhance Sensory Experiences
While we all love a good holiday candle, sometimes the pumpkin and pine aromas overpower or—worse—compete with the kitchen’s delicious seasonal scents. Set up unscented candles instead. Also, make sure your background music fits your intended vibe, and play it at a volume such that guests can comfortably converse.
Delight in the Desserts
Guests have different dietary restrictions as well as flavor preferences, so offer a wide variety of desserts. Consider setting up bite-sized treats so everyone is encouraged to sample several. Visually appealing cakes (such as SusieCakes’ four-layer Chocolate Peppermint cake) can easily double as centerpieces, and seasonal fruits can also become a delicious display.
Embrace Seasonal Traditions
The holidays are a great excuse to bring heirloom linens, silver, china and crystal to your table along with the special memories they hold. If guests are encouraged to contribute to the meal, prompt them to share stories behind their recipes. Your event can create new memories while also honoring beloved friends, relatives and traditions of the past. With attention to details, a combination of past and present and all the sentiments of love felt throughout—may your party become a memorable occasion.
