From the bustling streets filled with boutique shops and local artisans to the tantalizing array of culinary delights, this series will spotlight the essence and charm of The Plaza, Midtown and Downtown. In this captivating three-part video series, Oklahoma’s own Prairie Surf takes us on an intimate journey into the heart and distinctiveness of each district. In the series’ first episode, we’re taking a tour of the Plaza District. Here is what Payne had to say about this exciting area of town.
What makes the Plaza District so unique to Oklahoma City?
Matt Payne: The Plaza District is the rock star of Oklahoma City districts. There is not a square inch of the entire neighborhood that isn’t overflowing with color and originality. There is so much soul — and it is most evident when you visit with any of the business owners, be they retail merchants, chefs or pie makers.
What surprises you most about the Plaza District?
MP: What surprises me most about the Plaza is that the more time you spend exploring the district, the more you see. There is artwork and personality everywhere. Simply browsing a single store could take an hour, and in some of the shops (like Bad Granny’s Bazaar) you could spend an entire day!
Describe your perfect day in the Plaza District.
MP: I’d have to have refrained from eating a whole 24 hours before beginning my perfect day in the Plaza, to ensure I could eat at least something in every one of the restaurants. I’m not sure how the perfect day would start, but I imagine it would end with me walking away with a full belly, some new threads — shoes included — and some local art, a camera app full of photos and a pie to bring home to my kiddos.
