When the days get shorter, and the temperature cools, Oklahomans have plenty of comforts to turn to—but few dishes capture the seasonal spirit like chicken pot pie. The composition of this Americana tradition varies wildly from pie to pie, but the heart and soul contains some combination of stewed chicken, toothsome veggies and gravy-like sauce in a buttery pie crust. All over town, OKC restaurants and cafes serve their own singular renditions; some are seasonal staples, while others are so popular that they remain menu fixtures year-round.

Kitchen No. 324

It’s basically two chicken dishes in one at Kitchen No. 324, a downtown anchor known for tinkering with comfort food traditions, where pot pie comes topped with a piece of fried chicken. Underneath, it’s tender chicken breast enrobed in creamy sherry sauce, with carrots, onions, celery, garlic, rosemary and thyme. On top, it’s a buttery biscuit crust and a piece of golden-brown fried chicken leg. “This dish offers the comforting taste of a traditional chicken pot pie, with a modern twist of a fried chicken drum stick placed vertically out of the top like a flag of deliciousness,” said Lauren Neundorf, Director of Marketing and Communications for A Good Egg Dining Group. “Visually, this really sets us apart from most traditional pot pies. We also focus on using the best ingredients and executional excellence.”

Chicken Pot Pie at Paseo Grill

Paseo Grill

For a classic cornerstone like Paseo Grill, chicken pot pie is the kind of signature dish that embodies an enduring classic. Among the menu’s mainstays, it has requisites like chicken, potatoes, carrots and peas, as well as a few potent surprises, like cayenne and curry. Available year-round, and served bubbling-hot in a cast-iron skillet, its evergreen popularity means that the kitchen only has limited availability, so especially in the cooler months, it’s likely to sell out—and rightfully so.

Red Rooster

Billing itself a modern American pub, Red Rooster is a neoteric neighborhood tavern that specializes in reinvented comfort foods. A favorite for many—including my husband, who orders it any time he possibly can—the chicken pot pie is made with local chicken, peas, carrots and sweet potatoes, under a biscuit-like puff pastry crown. The fan-favorite dish is only available October through April; as owner Andrea Koester explained, “People get very excited when it’s back on the menu.”

Chicken Pot Pie at Pie Junkie

Pie Junkie

One of OKC’s foremost dessert destinations, pie comes in a multitude of flavors at Pie Junkie, from lemon cream and Kentucky bourbon to French silk and cherry crumble. But while the sweet versions may take top billing, don’t sleep on the savory chicken pot pie. A top-seller, the traditional chicken pot pie is made with diced chicken breast, carrots, celery, onions and peas, in a flaky butter crust with scratch-made cream sauce. Describing it as a simple recipe made with high-quality ingredients, manager Emily Weinbrenner said, “Our bakers roll, fill and crimp every crust by hand in our Plaza District location. They’re sold frozen with baking instructions so you can enjoy them at home in a pinch, or gift them to someone else who might need an easy meal for themselves or their family.”
