Artists can submit entries until Sept. 1, and the exhibit opens Sept. 16.
The OKC Metro Literacy Coalition will host the first Artists for Literacy exhibition, showcasing Oklahoma artists’ artwork focused on the issue of literacy.
The call for artists invites artists to submit entries for public exhibition that creatively portray the spirit of literacy. Entries must be submitted by Sept. 1, 2022. Selected pieces will be exhibited at The Art Hall, at 519 NW 23rd St. in Oklahoma City, from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31 with an opening event Sept. 29.
In Oklahoma County, an estimated 12% of the population do not have basic literacy skills. Artists for Literacy seeks to increase community-wide awareness and support for literacy, which is the capacity to understand, interpret and communicate effectively in order to participate in a community and wider society.
“A person who cannot read struggles to find work, to pay bills, to vote, to manage health care needs and confidently voice personal concerns,” said Mary Surbeck, OKC Metro Literacy Coalition board chairperson. “When individuals learn to read, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, lower health care costs, find and keep sustainable employment and ultimately change their lives and their family’s well-being.”
The call for artists is open to artists aged 18 or older, professional or emerging. All art must be original and created by the submitting artist. Artists may submit painting, photography, drawing, monoprint, clay, wood, wire, fiber and mixed media pieces no larger than six feet for two-dimensional artwork and no taller than four feet for three-dimensional pieces. The exhibition does not have an entry fee for artists and multiple cash prizes will be awarded up to $500. Find more details and the online entry form at the exhibition’s website.
