The Oklahoma City Council unanimously approved a proclamation declaring April as Fair Housing Month.

“Realtors do more than help people find the home of their dreams,” said Carolyn Sims, Oklahoma City Metropolitan Association of Realtors president. “We work every day to ensure federal and state laws regarding housing are followed, and we help ensure everybody — regardless of race, sex, orientation, religion, gender identity, national origin or any other characteristic — has equal access to housing and real estate. We appreciate the city council’s support of our ideals.”

OKCMAR holds various trainings throughout the year to ensure realtors understand their responsibilities to ensure fairness in housing, according to a news release from the organization.

“One of my primary goals as mayor is to do everything in my power to ensure we are ‘One OKC,’ where everyone has equal opportunity,” said Mayor David Holt. “Housing plays a major role in helping families create stability and generational wealth, and it is critical for everyone to have equal opportunity to own real estate and live where they choose. We are fortunate to have OKCMAR and its members working to ensure fairness for all people.”

In April, OKCMAR is encouraging its members to participate in National Association of Realtors’ Fairhaven Challenge, in which realtors and affiliates complete a fair housing simulation to identify discriminatory practices and best responses. The training is free and available to the public.
